A metropolitan elitist writes

Over on the Normblog Mr Geras praises the great city of Manchester. And why not? It's a very fine place indeed. There's just one point I didn't quite understand:
All you metropolitan folk who think it's just darkness and barbarism north of Watford, think again.
Surely now that the UK is ruled by a "Scottish Raj" darkness and barbarism commence when one goes south of Motherwell.

Yes, Ayrshire (well, South Ayrshire) must be an exception. I think that we can regard certain parts of southern Scotland as being honorary parts of the metropolitan heartland rather like Oxford and Cambridge were in the days before the Scottish Raj takeover.

    ???

A little hard on those of us who quite like parts of Ayrshire perhaps.

Motherwell itself is pretty dark and barbarous in parts, I think you'll find.

Not to mention Lanarkshire "bronze statuette" Council...

The great mathematician Littlewood left Cambridge for Manchester. After some months he left home one morning with an unaccounable lightnesss to his stride. He pondered. Got it! It wasn't raining.
