The Bagged Bear I'm alarmed that Carlisle city centre was taking a break between trains. Where was it travelling to? Did it have to pay for an extra seat? Is it suddenly going to reappear pres de Mougins in the sultry South of France.

I read somewhere the other day that Dumfries had the highest proportion of national chain stores (as opposed to locally-owned shops) in the High Street of any place in Scotland or maybe it was the UK. That may affect one's perception of the place(s).

dearieme A few years ago I visited Carlisle and Dumfries on the same day: C looked prosperous and D down in the dumps. When I was young they had looked about equally prosperous. What happened?
