It's simple really

Janet Daley asks:
Whose considered judgment is it that the broadcast (unlike the print) media should cringe in the face of extremist Islam?
It is the "considered judgment" of a broadcast media that is (unlike the print media) financed or regulated by the state.

ITV aren't state owned though they are very strongly regulated (remember London Weekend after Death on the Rock).

It may also be that the custmer doesn't directly pay for the service, advertisers do. Advertisers naturally wnat a product that doesn't offend anybody whereas customers want a paper that will provide a bit of excitement & to be fair, pander somewhat to their prejudices.

David,

In this instance I'd have to say that the cringe is more a consequence of the profound self-loathing felt by those who run the institution that's the problem, rather than the institution's ultimate ownership by the state.

Although of course I agree that state ownership of anything than nuclear weapons and traffic lights is a very bad idea.
