G8 & ID

I met someone last night who has friends in both the Metropolitan and the Lothian and Borders Police. The view of the ordinary copper is that they don't want ID cards and they suspect that Tony Blair is hoping for violence during the G8 meeting as an excuse for introducing the cards.

The best means to resist ID cards is simply refuse to get one. If enough people do this there is no way those who do not carry them will be denied health care, electricity etc.

If everyone rolls over and just accepts the cards maybe the UK really does get the government it deserves...

I don't see any inevitability about the ID project. It is flawed in so many ways .

I think we have to recognize that it is longer possible to go it alone in Britain and ignore what other counries are doing. More sophisticated means of identification are inevitable.

On the other hand technology offers us all kinds of ways of avoiding the bad aspects of the cards.

David Ellams - and you will not drive, open a bank account, have an electricity supply, use any healthcare services, travel abroad, fly on any plane, apply for planning permission, work for the state or any large company, graduate from any University, register your children's births, buy shares, ...

Good luck.

This must be the most authoritarian government since that of Charles 1st.

The answer to identity cards is that that the proposal itself is an act of treason because it violates common law, Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights.

I have gone on record to the effect that if identity cards are introduced I shall not comply with them. I will not register, I will not carry one.I encourage the rest of the country to do the same.

I will not give my moral sanction to any thug who wants to destroy my life, liberty, rights or property.

Slightly off topic:

I just attended a corporate seminar where our American CEO took questions at the end. When asked "What is the biggest risk that the UK financial industry faces?" he answered without pausing for thought "Your government".

Since when did he need an excuse?
