It doesn't help that the mere mention of Scottish accents always makes me think of a chicken saying "thrust!".

David Wildgoose Interesting. I live in Sheffield, practically the middle of England and yet WE use "besom" as in "naughty besom", typically when referring in an indulgent manner towards children or pets, (not gender specific though).
Assuming it's the same word of course, I've never seen how it's spelt, it's pronounced "beezum".

Stuart Dickson That is a very popular adjective in our family too, as in: "The wee besom!"
