A PAISLEY councillor has launched an astonishing attack on the Mormon religion, dubbing its members "morons" and "buffoons."It gets "better":
"Card carrying Mormon and SNP MSP Brian Adam has been instrumental in bringing these Moron students to work as "Interns" at Holyrood for SNP MSPs."What could be behind this hatred? Unlike (I suspect) Mr Kelly, I've actually been to Utah, the home of the Mormon HQ. The people there are very hard working and self-reliant. They're not the kind of folk who would vote for the likes of Mr Kelly. He claims to support "peace and the redistribution of wealth". The Mormons support peace and the creation of wealth. He adds: "The deeds that are done and the poison which is spread in the name of Christ drives me to despair.
I say to Mr Adam and the Moron religion, gentle Jesus would not touch you with a barge pole, I hope the Lord will visit a plague of boils and locusts on the lot of you.
"If you are black and gay the Moron Church will pray to have the warmest corner of hell saved for you."

Bill,
Such attitudes are shocking amongst any 'paid agents' of intolerance anywhere
Hello 'anonymous', or should that be Martin?

It may not be current doctrine, but the Mormon church has a long history of racism, grounded in their holy book:
"And the Lord had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them." II Nephi 5:21.

He claims to support "peace and the redistribution of wealth".
Pick one.

Mr Kelly lists himself as a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
I wonder if, given the electoral maths of Paisley and the voting habits of Catholic folk in the West of Scotland, he would launch such an attack on that church.
Somehow, I doubt it.

Bill,
Such attitudes are shocking amongst any 'paid agents' of intolerance anywhere - mind you, there are ways in which some 'cults' beat others hands down.
We got Keith O' Brien, they got Donny Osmond.
No competition, really.

I don't know what the attitude of the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints) is toward persons of colour, but it is certainly true that its attitude toward homosexuality is unreconstructed - perhaps not as extreme as the Rev Phelps, but still not friendly (that is an understatement of course). Whether the reference toward 'Morons' is an ignorant error or an attempt at irony I have no idea, but it made me smile. The fact that Mormons are generally self-reliant and wealth-creators, a necessity in a harsh environment such as Utah, does not negate any of the justified criticisms of this cult, some of which are highlighted in your post.
